What’s Going to Outlast You?
“What are you building that is going to out live you?” That penetrating question was posed to me while returning from a mission’s trip to Ukraine. We overnighted on the return in Vienna, Austria. Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Perhaps most famous for the opera houses, café’s and cathedrals.
While touring Saint Stephen’s Cathedral, where the wedding in the musical Sound of Music was filmed, I noticed the date construction began, 1137, and when it concluded, 1345. Realizing that the original contractor never saw completion of this beautiful structure that the Lord spoke to my heart that question, “What are you building that is going to out live you?”
David was a man who thought about future generations. In closing chapters of 1 Chronicles, we read how David prepared for the construction of the Temple that Solomon built. He prepared for the resources of gold, silver, brass and iron. He solicited assistance from the people for the future temple’s construction. He charged Solomon with the responsibility to accomplish the task. All of that and David never saw the completion of the Temple physically. He did see it in the spirit though.
What are we building that will outlive us? A better question is “WHO are we building that will out live us?” Our children and grandchildren are initial responses. However, are building lives beyond our immediate families? When we build people, we build the Kingdom. Guess what? Moth, rust can’t decay the Kingdom, nor can thieves break in and steal the Kingdom. The Kingdom of God is people. Let’s build people that will continue to build into others long after we’ve gone to be with the Lord.
